The Film Bridge Development Association, in collaboration with the Mongolian National Film Council, proudly announces the annual "KHARKHORUM" International Film Festival.
The mission of the Kharkhorum Film Festival extends beyond regional borders, aspiring to unite filmmakers globally on the vibrant stage nestled in Central Asia. Our vision is to create an inclusive and dynamic platform that beckons filmmakers from around the world, inviting diverse narratives, cultures, and cinematic expressions to converge at this cultural crossroads. By fostering this international gathering, we aim to provide a welcoming space for creators worldwide to share their stories and craft. At its core, while uniting to celebrate filmmakers worldwide, our mission also extends to showcasing and elevating Mongolian film productions and filmmakers on a global stage and bolstering investments in Mongolia's economy through the medium of cinema. We are committed to fostering international standards in filmmaking and advancing the movie business, both locally and globally. Through this celebration of global cinematic diversity and the dedicated spotlight on Mongolian cinema, the Kharkhorum Film Festival aims to create an impactful nexus where cultures converge, artistic excellence thrives, and the global film community flourishes.
It invites feature films created within the past two years to contend for three esteemed awards: "Best Feature Film," "Best Documentary Film," and an Award of the Respective Topic of the Year.
With a substantial prize fund, the festival will unite the expertise of top Mongolian and international film professionals annually, setting the stage for a collaborative celebration of cinematic excellence.
As part of the festival, a one-day training will be organized for young screenwriters and producers, involving 50 film works. The workshop will focus on how to incorporate human rights issues into film, the potential risks involved, and strategies to overcome them. Participants will learn how to turn compelling real-life stories and case studies into powerful scripts. Lectures and practical sessions will be conducted by international film festival judges and human rights experts, encouraging the exchange of ideas and experiences. The training also aims to build long-term connections and support networks for filmmakers aspiring to create works centered on human rights. In addition to Mongolian human rights lawyers, film scholars, and educators, distinguished guests such as Malcolm Clarke—a two-time Academy Award-winning director and head of the Kharkhorum Festival jury—and renowned South Korean director Chung Ji-Young will conduct sessions based on their professional experiences. The workshop will take place on December 9, 2023, starting at 8:45 AM. Registration is available at www.kharkhorum-iff.com. For inquiries, please contact 88106865.
As part of this year’s Kharkhorum International Film Festival, a master class will be held for producers and directors who wish to submit their films to international film festivals. The session will be led by two distinguished guests: Maria Razzakamboly, founder and program director of the "Asiatica" Film Festival, and Ellen Kim, executive director and producer of the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN).
This forum aims to explore how Mongolia is addressing human rights issues amid its democratic development and to reflect on the impact of rapidly evolving information technologies on the Mongolian screen arts, particularly cinema. The goal is to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders so that filmmakers can present human rights issues accurately and positively through their work. The event will bring together professionals from the film industry, representatives from civil society, and citizens, creating a space for inclusive dialogue. The forum will conclude with a joint declaration urging all creators of films and content to commit to responsibly and effectively representing human rights in their future projects. This initiative aspires to improve the depiction of both progress and violations of human rights in Mongolian cinema, helping it gain international recognition and success. Government representatives, human rights organizations, and honored guests of the festival will give presentations and participate in panel discussions.
